Police are warning there will be an increased presence of officers in Tai Rāwhiti this weekend because of a planned gang meeting.

Area commander, Inspector Danny Kirk said the gathering would involve a number of leaders of a gang.

"As is standard with these events, police have been proactively engaging with the organisers of this event to ensure public disruption is limited and any activity remains lawful," he said.

Extra police staff are being brought in from across the Eastern District to help monitor the gang hui.

"Residents can expect to see an increased police presence in the region over the weekend," Kirk said.

In May, there was a spate of drive-by shootings in Gisborne which police said were gang related.

It followed a police operation in March after eight incidents, involving assaults and firearms.

Under laws introduced by the government in November 2024, gang insignia is not allowed to be worn in public.
