The stories of Road Dahl have been hugely popular on stage and screen, and now, The Enormous Crocodile has been turned into a musical.
In the story, a greedy crocodile eats children for lunch and devises secret plans and tricks to catch them. But the plans always foiled by the other animals in the jungle.
Following a successful season in the UK, it’s now premiering at the Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis. The CTC was established in 1965. It’s been named as a top theatre for children in the US and in 2003 won a Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre.
At the helm of the musical direction is British Kiwi Ben Kubiak.
Kubiak spent his schooling years in Tamaki Mākaurau before working as a répétiteur for NZ Opera, singer, performer, and lecturer at the University of Auckland. The multi-disciplinary artist is now based in London and speaks to Culture 101 about carving out a career from being indecisive and how he became involved in The Enormous Crocodile.
