RNZ to retire Tihiotonga AM transmission mast
RNZ is retiring its AM transmission mast in Tihiotonga, Rotorua. The mast has reached the end of its service life and overlapping signals from other AM/FM sites will cover most of the transmission region.
The closure will mean AM listeners in rural Rotorua District who currently listen to RNZ National on 1188 AM will need to retune to either 101.5 FM or 819 AM by 1 July 2025 to avoid any disruption.

As the public media broadcaster celebrates its 100th birthday, RNZ is looking back at how it has been a source of connection for New Zealanders through different moments in the country’s history.
This reflection comes in the form of a new podcast, called RNZ100: A century of stories. The six episodes, released weekly from today, revisit significant events in history, some of which had worldwide impacts and others were unique to New Zealand.

RNZ continues to build trust in its 100th year
RNZ has improved its trust result by 7 points in only six months.
The growth in trust was captured in RNZ’s latest audience survey by Verian Research, which featured a larger sample of 2000 New Zealanders. In the survey 56% agree RNZ is an organisation you can trust – up from 49% on the previous result.Released 10:59 am on 27 May 2025
