Firefighters have called off a one-hour strike on Friday, but issued a new strike notice for a fortnight's time.
This followed bargaining talks between the Professional Firefighters' Union (NZPFU) and Fire and Emergency.
The union said it had reworked some claims and expected fresh information in talks with Fire and Emergency on Monday.
It warned the cancellation would only be a short respite if they could not find a way to a settlement.
Firefighters were still due to strike for an hour next Friday, November 14, and issued a new notice to strike for an hour on November 21 too.
Paid firefighters previously walked off the job last month amid stalled negotiations.
It followed a FENZ pay offer in June of 5.1 percent over three years, which was declined by the NZPFU.
The union said members had not had a pay increase since July 2023.
Earlier on Thursday, it was revealed Fire and Emergency were considering cutting jobs and "stopping or slowing" activities as it seeks to save $50 million a year.
It said the jobs of frontline firefighters were not at risk, but the union feared new recruits would not be added.
