The Corrections Inspectorate will investigate the death of a man at Christchurch Men's Prison.
The prison's general manager Jo Harrex confirmed in a statement to RNZ a 75-year-old man died at the prison on Friday, from what appeared to be natural causes.
Corrections declined to respond to several questions from RNZ about the man's death citing privacy, and that the coroner was yet to determine the cause of death.
"Our thoughts are with the man's family and friends. Other men in the unit and staff were provided with support, including access to Chaplains and cultural support where requested."

All deaths in custody were referred to the coroner for investigation and determination of cause of death, Harrex said.
"An investigation by the independent Corrections Inspectorate will also be carried out."
