Danny Topia, a candidate running for election in Thames-Coromandel, has died.
Topia was running for a seat on the Coromandel-Colville Community Board, but died early on Wednesday.
"He was due to speak, alongside others, at the local 'Meet the Candidates' event in Coromandel Town last night," the council said in a statement.
The council said it extended its heartfelt condolences to Topia's whānau, friends and supporters.
Topia's candidate profile was included in the local election voting packs, but locals were advised any votes cast for him would not be counted.
Voting remains open until midday Saturday 11 October.
