One person has died following a crash on State Highway 8-Manuka Gorge highway.
Emergency services were alerted to a two-vehicle crash south of Waitahuna around 4.50pm on Thursday.
Police said one person died at the scene, while another person sustained serious injuries.
The Serious Crash Unit had carried out a scene examination and Police said enquiries into the cause of the crash were ongoing.
The highway was closed until the early hours of Friday between Johnston Road and Burma Road.
State Highway 1 - Ashburton to Fairton also closed
The Serious Crash Unit also attended another two-vehicle crash on Rakaia Highway in Canterbury.
The State Highway 1 road was closed between Works Road and Fairfield West Road following the crash, which was reported at about 7.20pm.
Diversions were in place until the road re-opened.
