Raw sewage from the Omakau wastewater plant was washed into the Manuherikia River for eight hours during a storm on Tuesday.
Central Otago District Council has confirmed the sewerage is now contained to the treatment ponds but the plant is damaged.
People
should stay out of the water between Omakau and the confluence with the Mata Au/Clutha River until further notice. Tim Cadogan is the Central Otago District Mayor.
