Melbourne lockdown extended, more restrictions introduced

From Morning Report, 8:39 am on 17 August 2021

Melburnians face another two weeks in lockdown, with officials saying the city is teetering on "the brink" of losing control of the Delta outbreak.

A raft of new restrictions came into effect at midnight, including a nightly curfew, closing playgrounds, and banning people from taking off their masks to drink alcohol.

It's hoped the strengthened measures will keep the state from going over the tipping point like New South Wales, which yesterday reported record-high cases and deaths.

University of Melbourne epidemiologist Professor Tony Blakely spoke to Philippa Tolley.
