Whangārei District Council is the latest local body to formally sound the alarm over greenhouse gas emissions - by declaring a climate change emergency.
It's been warned that without urgent action, Whangārei coastal communities will be under water in the decades to come.
Rising sea-levels could also threaten the city's new $26 million Hundertwasser Centre.
