Government will repeal the Three Strikes Law

From Midday Report, 12:12 pm on 11 November 2021

The government will repeal the Three Strikes Law.

The Justice Minister Kris Faafoi is tabling a repeal bill in Parliament saying the law has led to absurd outcomes, where judges have had to give sentences they did not agree with.

"We have even seen the situation, recently, where the Supreme Court had to intervene in the case of an individual with long-standing and serious mental illness to correct what the Court said was so disproportionately severe that it breached the Bill of Rights," Mr Faafoi said.

Lawyer Kevin Preston took that case to the Supreme Court, and speaks to Māni Dunlop about the reforms.
