A young boy with a visible black eye blew out five candles on his birthday cake at a daycare centre....a few months later, weighing just 16 kilograms, he died from horrific injuries inflicted by the hands of his carer. An inquest into the death of Malachi Subecz in 2021 has heard how the woman looking after him while his mother was in prison subjected him to months of horrific abuse. Malachi's death sparked national outrage and a series of reviews into the child protection system. Amy Williams reports.
